NBC News: Today
ANN CURRY, co-host: Working her way over to us now is the new Miss Universe. Her name Stefania Fernandez. She represents Venezuela and she was crowned on Sunday, beating out beautiful women from more than 80 countries all around the world. It's the second year in a row that Miss Venezuela has won the pageant, and the sixth title for the country overall. And Miss Universe, Stefania Fernandez, is here along with her translator, Tom Reyes.
Good morning to both of you. And congratulations to you.
Mr. TOM REYES: Good morning.
Ms. STEFANIA FERNANDEZ: Oh, thank you.
CURRY: The thing is, you know, when you--when you knew that Miss Venezuela won last year, did you think that your chances would decrease this year and so what was your reaction?
Mr. REYES: (Foreign language spoken)
Ms. FERNANDEZ: (Foreign language spoken)
Mr. REYES: It was a difficult challenge but she never felt it was impossible and she loves a good challenge.
AL ROKER reporting: This was your first--and now this was your first time in New York City. Seeing the city for the first time and meeting Donald Trump, which was more imposing, the skyscrapers or Donald Trump's hair?
Mr. REYES: (Foreign language spoken)
Ms. FERNANDEZ: (Foreign language spoken)
Mr. REYES: It's our first time in New York and she had never seen such huge skyscrapers and all.
CURRY: And she's not going to add that she's never seen hair like that.
ROKER: What about the hair?
NATALIE MORALES, anchor: And what would you like to do as Miss Universe? What's your platform?
Mr. REYES: (Foreign language spoken)
Ms. FERNANDEZ: (Foreign language spoken)
Mr. REYES: She wants to thank the Miss Universe organization and Mr. Donald Trump, of course. And she'll be working for HIV/AIDS for the year.
Ms. FERNANDEZ: (Foreign language spoken)
CURRY: Oh, fantastic.
Mr. REYES: And meet young women around the world to...(unintelligible).
MORALES: That is great.
ROKER: Wonderful.
CURRY: Fantastic. Very fantastic.
ROKER: Congratulations.
CURRY: But you know, right now you need to teach us how to go brrr. Your twirl. Her twirl. Brrr.
Mr. REYES: (Foreign language spoken)
Ms. FERNANDEZ: (Foreign language spoken) Carlo.
CURRY: Carlo.
ROKER: And coming up, we still have TODAY'S KITCHEN, where it's all about the shrimp. But first, your local news and weather.
