Broadcast TV Should Take Steps to Differentiate Itself from Cable

Germán Landaeta, VP of Engineering Operations of Venevisión, emphasized to PRODU that Broadcast TV channels should beware of cable and do something to differentiate themselves such as broadcast on mobile television and mobile telephones, competition to Broadcast TV. This was in response to a conference titled “Broadband versus Broadcast” of the Fourth World Electronic Media Forum that took place in Mexico City, which Landaeta attended.

“The Internet and Broadband are associated with Broadcast TV. Cable isn’t and that’s why we should protect ourselves,” said Landaeta. In addition to this forum, he attended along with Gustavo Cores, Director of Videotaping and Postproduction, the Fourth International Congress of Sound and Audiovisual, held at the Fonoteca Nacional of Mexico City.

He also added that what really attracted his attention is that it was suggested to keep the original archives even after being transferred to the digital field. Venevisión, which is in the stage of initiating this process, will be in charge of digitalizing 100 thousand rolls from different formats, including 2 inched tapes and over 60 thousand hours of news. The process is estimated to take 8 years.
